On May 10-11, the Court of Accounts of the Republic of Moldova (CoARM) participated in the spring session of the EUROSAI Working Group on Environmental Audit (WGEA), held online.

The spring session of the EUROSAI WGEA Working Group brought together over 90 representatives of the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) from across Europe, such as Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Turkey, Estonia, Lithuania, Portugal, Norway, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Italy, Moldova, etc.

The theme of this year's meeting was "Water supply and its quality in terms of climate change".

While Europe is considered to have enough adequate water resources, its deficit and drought are becoming more widespread on the continent. Important areas with major impact on nature, ecosystems and tourism are agriculture, infrastructure, industrialization, etc. The long-term imbalance resulting from the demand for water, which exceeds the available aquatic resources, is no longer uncommon. Groundwater supplies 65% of low-quality drinking water and 25% of irrigation water. Combined chemical and qualitative assessments show that 30% of groundwater does not have sufficient capacity to meet the needs of ecosystems and the population.

According to the European Environment Agency, water bodies are increasingly facing the stresses of drought and deficit. Annually, the temperature of the Earth's surface increases, thus during the period 1990-2020 increasing by about 1,700 Celsius.

In this context, environmental policies have set fundamental goals to ensure access to quality water in sufficient quantities for all Europeans.

The participants shared their countries' experience in this area by introducing innovative methods and systemic solutions to reduce pollution in river and sea systems, in the context of the latest UN strategic documents: UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Program, European Commission Framework Directive Fitness-Check for Water and the Water4All partnership.

We note that the Court of Accounts pays particular attention to environmental issues, conducting a series of audits in the field, including joint audits at national level.
